Answering a baby’s cry

baby cryIf you’re a new mommy, you are probably just getting used to the sound of crying. At the same time, you might probably trip over furniture and stumble over the stairs every time you hear your baby cry. It’s natural. The sound of the baby’s cry makes young parents stress over thinking that there is something wrong with the baby. Chances are, there is really nothing wrong about the child. Crying is just the baby’s way of communicating its needs. As a new parent, you should know what things to consider when your baby cries.

More often than not, crying is the baby’s code for “I am hungry”. When your baby cries, try feeding him or her. Most of the time, the baby will start to calm down as soon as the feeding starts. In order to soothe the baby, cradle him during the feeding. This makes the baby feel secure.

If the baby cries despite the fact that you’ve just finished a feeding session, then maybe it’s time to burp the child. Sometimes, the baby cries simply because he’s got some gas and he’s uncomfortable. And since the baby’s system is still too young to handle the situation by itself, the baby will have to wait for you to help him. Although it can get messy, burping will help your child feel much better. As a new parent, you have to master this procedure. Just hold the baby upright and rest his body on your chest, making sure that his chin is on your shoulder. Lightly pat the baby’s back. The baby might produce a bit of spit so don’t forget to cover your shoulder with a towel. After the baby has burped, he will be able to go back to sleep.

Of course, your baby may cry because of a simple diaper issue. The baby may develop rashes as a result of using a diaper. If so, just make sure you change the diaper more frequently. If it helps, apply some cream on the rashes. This will help relieve the itch. In order to assess the situation, you may go to your pediatrician. The doctor may prescribe certain medications that will keep your bundle of joy happy and rash-free.

Crying may also be a sign that your baby is just a little tired. A day of playing will eventually tire out the child. A little nap time will do the trick. Just cradle your child and rock him gently until he calms down. Slowly, your child will stop crying and drift off to sleep. You have to make sure that the baby gets enough rest. A tired baby becomes fussier and is prone to more crying. And of course, excessive crying also drains the child’s energy.

Perhaps the baby also feels warm or uncomfortable especially when the weather is hot and humid. If this is the case, make sure he gets proper ventilation or have him cool up.

Always remember that babies like to be held and cradled. If your baby is crying, he may just want your attention and may want you to pick him up. This physical bonding is extremely important in raising a secure and independent child.

Wrapping up, crying is just the baby’s way of calling your attention on his needs. However, if the baby continues to cry after you’ve checked out all the usual possibilities, the child may have colic, a condition where a healthy child simply cries incessantly. Also check his body temperature, he might be experiencing fever.

In case some thing is way out, never hesitate to consult your doctor.
