Ultra care for baby’s skin:
The skin of the baby, especially infants, is a lot thinner and less oily as compared to an adult’s. Since baby skin is very fragile, it is very reactive to substances in the environment and more prone to bacterial infection making their skin easily irritated. Take extra precaution when exposing your baby outdoor because irritants can easily sore baby’s skin.
Babies produce less sweat than adults, so their inner body temperature is more difficult to maintain. This makes their skin less able to sweat out the waste through the skin as natural excretory measures. Although some babies do not easily react to allergens, majority of babies are simply sensitive.
While you lovingly care for your baby’s skin, somehow you’ve come across common skin conditions that have affected your baby. Don’t fret. Some of these conditions are normal and can be managed easily. They can disappear quickly if you give it proper care and attention. Listed below are the most common skin conditions and what you can do about them:
Heat rash – It looks like small pimples across the body which is pink in color. This is due to warm temperature in which the baby’s body is reacting. Since babies sweat glands are still not yet fully developed, you just have to make sure to cool the baby most of the time. Don’t place your tot in humid room. Dress your baby comfortably by putting on loose clothes. Make sure that you thoroughly dry your baby’s skin to make him feel fresh all over.
- Infant acne – You think adults only have acne? Babies get them too as pink spots appearing on their skin. Infants tend to retain the hormones of their mothers for a short period of time after being born. This causes infant acne. These spots usually disappear in the first early weeks. Talk to a health care pro if the spots remain and gets irritated.
- Cradle Cap – Also known as Seborrheic dermatitis for infants. This is caused by overactive glands in the scalp. They appear as scaly patches on the scalp during the first month but generally disappear. You can wipe it gently using baby oil and then shampoo it after a few minutes.
- Chafing – this is usually caused by clothes rubbing with the baby’s skin. It also happens when there is skin to skin contact or there is constant rubbing. Check or take off whatever is causing regular contact with the skin like straps or diaper clips. To avoid irritation and itch, always dry your baby’s skin by putting cornstarch or baby powder to the affected area. But be extremely careful in applying them so as not to be inhaled by your baby. There are some baby lotions or mild antibiotic creams that you can also apply to ease off the chafing.
For the ultimate care of your baby’s skin, remember not to overuse your baby care products that might lead to aggravated skin conditions listed above. Baby’s skin is so special. It is very sensitive and delicate and reacts easily to touch, temperature swing as well as irritants mostly coming from materials used in baby products. Talcum powder for one should be avoided since studies have showed that they can irritate the baby’s respiratory system when inhaled.
